Brixen is the oldest city in the Tyrol, framed by vineyards and green meadows in the wide, sunny basin below the local mountain Plose. Unlike almost all other cities in South Tyrol, Brixen, with its 20,000 inhabitants, has retained its imposing charm and gentle atmosphere, with cultural treasures, romantic alleys, lively arcades, small shops selling South Tyrolean handicrafts and Italian fashion, as well as cosy restaurants and historic buildings.
Brixen, in the Eisack Valley, was first documented in 901 and still impresses with its cultural and architectural richness. The meeting point for culture-loving guests is the old town with its charming arcades and narrow streets. Numerous churches and chapels, primarily the Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace, still bear witness to the historical importance of the city. The most valuable and best known sacred building is obviously the Cathedral. Even though the bishop’s seat was moved to Bolzano several years ago, Brixen Cathedral continues to be the first church in South Tyrol in terms of importance. Right in front of the cathedral gates lies the dynamic heart of the city, showing its best sides: shops, bars and typical restaurants attract guests and residents to Brixen/Bressanone. And why not? Take some time out, sit on one of the many benches in the middle of the parks and gardens, relax and enjoy the cheerful activity in front of you.
